Col Edwin Smith, President
Col Edwin C. Smith is a 27-year member of the 117th Air Refueling Wing. He began his career in 1977 when he joined the Guard as an Imagery Interpretation Specialist. He served in that capacity for four years gaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1981 Col Smith completed training at the Academy of Military Science, which is the Guard equivalent to Officers Training School. He went on to fly 14 years and accumulate over 1,500 hours as a Weapons System Officer (WSO) on the RF4C Phantom. In 1994 he transitioned to the KC135R Stratotanker where he has flown nearly 1700 hours as a Navigator. Col Smith served as the Chief of Safety for the 117th Air Refueling Wing until he recently took command of the 117th Mission Support Group. Col Smith is married to the lovely Anita Morrow Smith. They have two sons, Edwin II who attends the University of Alabama, and Christopher who attends Ramsey High School. Col Smith is an active member of Rising Star Baptist Church where he serves as president of Fishers of Men, and is a member of the Trustee Board, the Missionary Society and the Christian Board of Education. He is also a member of the American Legion Post# 347, The National Guard Association and The Enlisted Association. He likes to spend his spare time playing golf and traveling.
  
 
LtCol Jeffrey Newton, 1st Vice President
Lt Col Newton was elected as the 2nd Vice President in the 30 August 2007 Executive Council meeting following BG Johnson's resignation as 1st Vice President. He is a 25-year member of the 117th Air Refueling Wing, Alabama Air National Guard, and is assigned as Commander of the 117th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. As an additional duty, he’s an Admissions Liaison Officer in the Birmingham area for the United States Air Force Academy. LTC Newton received his BS degree in Business from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. LTC Newton and his wife Lisa live in Hoover, Alabama

LTC Danny Hughes, Immediate Past President
LTC Danny Hughes is the Immediate Past President of NGAAL. LTC Hughes serves at the Deputy G-6 of the 167th Theater Sustainment Command, located in Birmingham, Alabama. His responsibilities include management of the G-6 section ensuring the latest technologies are used providing quality voice and data support to the 167th Headquarters. Danny enlisted in the Alabama Guard in March of 1981 in Company D 279th Signal Battalion. In 1985 he attended the Alabama Military Academy and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in June 1986. Danny spent the majority of his military career in the 142d Signal Brigade serving in various duty assignments. In Oct 1996 he was selected to work in the AGR program as a recruiting officer. Later he transferred back to the 142d Signal Brigade and served several positions most notably as the S3 of the brigade. In the spring of 2005, Danny was called upon to do his part in the Global War on Terrorism. He was mobilized and attached to the 335th Theater Signal Command where he led a joint team of military personnel, contractors and DOD civilians making and implementing plans to provide crucial commercial communications services at select bases across Iraq. Once his tour of duty was complete he was assigned to his current position in the 167th. Danny and his wife Nancy have been married for over 23 years and have two sons Tyler and Trey.

COL Christopher Jones, Judge Advocate
Colonel Christopher Jones is the JAG representative on the Executive Council. His current assignment is Staff Judge Advocate, 62nd Troop Command. COL Jones received his commission from ROTC in May, 1987 and a Direct Commission, February 1991. He has a total of more than 17 years of service and has graduated from the US Army Military Police Officer Basic Course, the US Army Judge Advocate General Officer Basic Course, U. S. Army Judge Advocate General Officer Advanced Course, 62nd Fiscal Law Course, U. S. Army Judge Advocate General School, 148th Contract Attorney’s Course, U. S. Army Judge Advocate General School, and the U. S. Army Command and General Staff College. COL Jones received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Alabama School of Commerce and his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. COL Jones and his wife, Virginia live in Tuscaloosa with their son “J.C.” and daughter Jessie Katherine.

Major Jon Michael Taylor, Treasurer
Major Taylor is the Treasurer for the National Guard Association of Alabama. He is a 20 year member of the 117th Air Refueling Wing, Alabama Air National Guard, and is assigned as Commander of the 117th Communications Flight. Major Taylor was selected as the 2004 AND the 2007 Alabama Air National Guard Company Grade Officer of the Year and just finished serving four years as the Air National Guard - Company Grade Representative on the National Board of Directors of the National Guard Association of the United States. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. MajorTaylor and his wife, Aletha, have three children, daughters Casey and Hannah and son Matt. They reside in Remlap, Alabama.

Lt Col Gary Kirk is a technician with the 187th Fighter Wing (F-16 unit) of the Air National Guard and serves as the Commander of the 187th Mission Support Flight, responsible for Recruiting, Retention, and Personnel functions for the Wing as well as three Geographically Separated Units. Prior to that, he served as the Commander of the Logistics Readiness Squadron as a Supply Officer and also served as a Communications Officer. He also served in the active duty Air Force for four years as an Operations Management Officer. He and his wife, Jeanine, have two sons, Andrew and Ryan. Lt Col Kirk serves as an Admissions Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy as an additional duty and is an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Prattville.

Col (ret) George McCurdy, Retired Life (Air)
Colonel George R. McCurdy III is the Retired Life (Air) Representative on the Executive Council. Colonel McCurdy retired as the Executive Support Staff Officer and the Technician Chief of Staff for the Alabama Air National Guard. He was assigned to the Alabama National Guard State Headquarters in Montgomery, Alabama. Colonel McCurdy is the previous Commander, 226 Combat Communications Group, Alabama Air National Guard. Colonel McCurdy attended Marion Military Institute (Junior College) and has a degree in Business from the University of Alabama. Colonel McCurdy entered the Air National Guard in 1969 as an Airman Basic and after graduating from the University of Alabama in 1972 was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1973. He has an extensive background in air traffic control and combat communications. Colonel McCurdy and his wife, Linda, have three children and four grandchildren.

Lt Col (R) Ron Stone, Executive Director
Stoney is the Executive Director of the National Guard Association of Alabama and the Administrator of the National Guard Association of Alabama Insurance Trust. After he received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alabama in 1971, he served seven years in the U.S. Navy and fifteen years with the 106th Tactical Reconaissance Squadron of the Alabama Air National Guard in Birmingham. Stoney is married to the former Brenda Tune of Birmingham. They live in Trussville and have have four children and six grandchildren.
